Took Jorgen to a traditional Malay wedding posing at the foot of the twin towers a very nice painting Fun for Special ScoutsBy CHRISTINA CHINTHE Penang Water Sports Recreation Centre was abuzz with laughter and cheer when a group of Special Scouts embarked on an unforgettable adventure there recently. Organised by the Penang Cheshire Home, the Special Scouts Carnival held in conjunction with 100 years of Scouting in Malaysia, saw the special children doing everything their able-bodied counterparts normally did at such events.
The children spent the day canoeing, communicating via ham radio, playing station games, learning flower arrangements, acquiring firefighting skills, making sandwiches and even trying their hand at paintballing! Thirteen-year-old Ng Phooi Ling said she had “a lot of fun” at the beach. “I love the water. My favourites were canoeing and the paintball session where I got to shoot with a gun.
“I hope they will have more carnivals for us,” she said, adding that all her friends had a good time too. Pulau Tikus assemblyman Koay Teng Hai, who was present to launch the event, praised the participants for showing the “Scouting spirit”. “Remember, you are all part of a worldwide movement with 28 million members in more than 150 countries,” he said, drawing a loud applause from the crowd.
In his speech, the home’s chairman Datuk Seri Khoo Keat Siew said the Scout Movement was for all young people, irrespective of creed, race and physical ability. “As far back as 1920, the movement’s founder Lord Baden Powel had emphasised that Scouting is not only for the physically strong but also for the weak so that they can gain their strength and hope. “The home started its Scout Movement in 2001 and recently organised the first Penang Cheshire Special Troop Camp in Cameron Highlands. “Today’s event is a follow-up to that because the kids requested another outing that included canoeing as part of the activities,” he said. The home’s Scouts coordinator Veronica Pau urged parents of children with special needs to allow them to participate in “normal activities”. “Give them a chance to join society. These special children can be like everyone else if they receive proper training and guidance. “Some of the activities may have to be improvised and adapted to their capabilities but other than that, disability should not be a hindrance to them. “No one is perfect and every-one needs a little help. Each and everyone of us has some form of disability. For instance, those who wear spectacles need help with their vision too,” she said. A total of 36 participants from the home and Penang Cerebral Palsy (Spastic) Children’s Association attended the event. World Scouting volunteers run an activity in the World Scout Centre at this year’s Jamboree.
In addition, Mr. Rick Cronk, Chairman of the World Scout Committee wishes to send a special message:
On December 5th each year, we celebrate the “International Day of Volunteers” in Scouting.
The most powerful force in our efforts to deliver an exciting Scout programme to as many young people as we can possibly reach, are the skills, enthusiasm and care of our volunteers.
Volunteers are passionate Mums, Dads, neighbours, men and women, adults old and young who are deeply concerned for the safety, character and feelings of self worth in the lives of children.
To all volunteers in every corner of the world, we thank you.
Without you there would be no Scouting.
Peace be with you,
Rick Cronk

First meeting of the new World Scout Committee 2008 - 2011
Posted by: erickhoo2 in World
The new World Scout Committee held its first meeting over the weekend, which was also the first of its kind under the new Committee structure that was established at the recent 38th World Scout Conference in Korea.

What remains the same of the World Scout Committee structure is that there are still twelve elected members with voting rights, but the status of the Secretary General of the World Organization and the Treasurer has changed to ‘ex-officio non-voting members’. They are also now joined by the Chairperson or Vice-Chairperson of each duly elected Regional Scout Committee and a member of the Board of the World Scout Foundation as non-voting members.
Among the many subjects on the Committee’s agenda were: follow-up to World Scout Conference resolutions and the recommendations from the World Scout Youth Forum; the process to be followed for the appointment of the Secretary General and the feasibility study on the location of the World Scout Bureau; the Triennial Plan for 2008-2011 and the annual operational plan and budget for the current fiscal year; constitutional, relationships and financial matters; and future World Scout Events.
The sub-committees were also finalised as was the list of who would be the Chairperson for each. They are:
- Strategy Coordination Group: Mario Diaz
- Regional Support Coordination Group: Simon Rhee
- Audit Committee: Martin Burbridge (Ireland)
- Budget Committee: Erik Khoo
- Constitutions Committee: Derek Pollard (U.K.)
- Honours & Awards Committee: Jørgen Rasmussen (Denmark)
- Educational Methods Committee: John May
- Scouting’s Profile Committee: Thérèse Bermingham
Also participating in their first meeting were the six Youth Advisors to the World Scout Committee who were elected at the 10th World Scout Youth Forum in July 2008.
